WCF vs Web Service

Web Service is a term used for a functionality provided via HTTP and XML Serialization.

WCF is a framework from MS to develop application that can use any of protocol (http, pipe, TCP/IP, REST) and uses Contract Serialization.

  1. Web Service can be developed using ASP.net, JAVA or PHP etc. However WCF is a framework provided by Microsoft to develop distributed applications. WS-* stuff is more easily done with WCF.

  2. WCF is a framework from MS to build applications that can be accessed using many (all possible) communication mechanisms. It can communicate using Peer to Peer, Named Pipes, Web Services etc.. Another important feature is that we can select/configure any required communication mechanisms without change in code.
